ABSTRACT
The rapid growth of digital payment systems has transformed India into one of the world’s leading digital economies. Platforms such as UPI developed by the National Payments Corporation of India along with mobile wallets, cards, and internet banking, have significantly reshaped how consumers transact and spend. This study, titled “A Comparative Study of Digital Payment Systems and Their Impact on Consumer Spending Patterns in India,” analyzes major digital payment modes and examines how their adoption influences consumer behaviour.
The research is based entirely on secondary data collected from government publications, financial reports, industry studies, and credible online sources. The comparative analysis evaluates payment systems using parameters such as convenience, speed, interoperability, security, and cost. The findings reveal that UPI is the most widely used and preferred payment mode in India, primarily due to its instant processing, zero transaction cost, and universal accessibility. Mobile wallets continue to thrive due to cashback and reward incentives, while credit/debit cards dominate high-value and e-commerce transactions.
The study concludes that digital payments have increased the frequency of purchases, encouraged impulse buying, expanded online shopping, and improved spending transparency. However, the convenience they offer can also lead to overspending and reduced budgeting discipline for some consumers. The research highlights that digital payments have become a behavioural habit rather than a mere financial tool.
The study offers suggestions for consumers, payment providers, and policymakers to enhance security, promote financial literacy, and ensure responsible usage. Overall, the research emphasizes that digital payments are not only changing transaction methods but are actively shaping India’s consumer spending landscape.
