Abstract: Rapid urban expansion has intensified the complexity of sewage management, necessitating intelligent and autonomous monitoring solutions. This study proposes a Smart Sewage Overflow Monitoring and Alerting System, an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled framework designed to detect overflow conditions and hazardous gas accumulation in real time. The system integrates an ESP32 microcontroller with ultrasonic and gas sensors to continuously capture environmental parameters within sewage chambers.
Sensor data is transmitted using the lightweight MQTT protocol to cloud-based platforms for real-time visualization and control. Upon detection of abnormal conditions, the system autonomously activates safety mechanisms, including pump shutdown and alarm triggering. Experimental validation demonstrates a high degree of reliability, achieving approximately 99% detection accuracy with a sub-250 ms response latency under simulated fault scenarios. The proposed solution is economically viable, scalable, and significantly enhances occupational safety and environmental protection.
