Abstract
This study explores how rural households in Tamil Nadu make health choices between Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) and modern allopathic medicine. It examines their knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about traditional medicine and how economic factors influence these decisions. The research finds that traditional systems like Siddha, Ayurveda, and Homeopathy are popular because they are familiar, affordable, and easily accessible, especially in rural areas. Many households prefer traditional medicine for routine illnesses, while they turn to modern medicine for emergencies due to its faster relief and scientific approach. The study shows that factors such as income, education, age, and cultural beliefs greatly affect health-seeking behavior. Higher income and better education increase the likelihood of choosing modern healthcare, while lower-income and less-educated households rely more on traditional systems.Cost, accessibility, and cultural trust also play important roles in shaping these choices. The analysis reveals that economic constraints often lead families to delay treatment or rely on cheaper traditional options, which can negatively affect health outcomes. To improve healthcare access and awareness, policies should focus on making treatments affordable, enhancing education about traditional medicine, and improving healthcare infrastructure. Overall, integrating traditional and modern healthcare systems, while addressing socio-economic barriers, can help ensure better health for rural communities in Tamil Nadu. This approach can create a more inclusive healthcare environment, ultimately benefiting the overall well-being of rural populations. In this context, the study analyzes the key and emerging challenges that are increasingly influencing today’s globally interconnected environment.
