Formulation and Evaluation of Cucumis Melo Based Exfoliating Scrub

ABSTRACT:

Herbal cosmetics have emerged as a safer and more sustainable alternative to synthetic skin care products due to their natural origin, therapeutic value, and minimal side effects. The present study was aimed at the formulation and evaluation of a polyherbal exfoliating face scrub containing Cucumis melo seed powder as the primary active ingredient. The formulation was designed to provide effective exfoliation, deep cleansing, antioxidant protection, moisturization, and skin rejuvenation using natural ingredients such as muskmelon seed powder, masoor dal powder, oatmeal powder, sandalwood powder, orange peel powder, coffee powder, Multani mitti, rose petals powder, tea tree oil, and glycerine.

Phytochemical screening of muskmelon seed powder confirmed the presence of flavonoids, phenolic compounds, fibres, and fatty acids, indicating significant antioxidant and skin-protective potential. Three different formulations were prepared and evaluated for important physicochemical parameters including colour, odour, texture, homogeneity, consistency, pH, irritability, washability, spreadability, grittiness, and viscosity.

Among all formulations, formulation F1 showed the most satisfactory results with smooth texture, good spreadability, moderate exfoliating property, absence of irritation, and skin-compatible pH. The formulated herbal scrub effectively removed dead skin cells, excess oil, dirt, and impurities while enhancing skin smoothness and natural glow.

The study highlights the potential of natural bioactive ingredients in developing effective herbal cosmeceutical products. The formulated scrub was found to be safe, stable, economical, eco-friendly, and suitable for regular skin care applications, offering a promising natural alternative to synthetic exfoliating products.
