Abstract
Human Resource Management practices in the Indian banking system have gained strategic importance because banks operate in a service-intensive, technology-driven and highly regulated environment. This study examines the challenges and opportunities associated with HRM practices in public and private sector banks, with special focus on recruitment, training, performance appraisal, compensation, employee engagement, career development and digital HR systems. The study adopts a quantitative descriptive and analytical design based on a sample of 156 bank employees, including 78 respondents from public sector banks and 78 from private sector banks. Structured questionnaire data were analysed through reliability testing, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression and a structural equation model using AMOS-based model-fit indicators. The results show that HRM practices are perceived positively in both sectors, but private sector banks record higher mean scores in training, appraisal, rewards and performance orientation. Regression and SEM results indicate that training and development, performance appraisal and compensation significantly influence employee performance and organizational effectiveness. The study also identifies major challenges such as workload pressure, digital skill gaps, rigid administrative systems, work-life imbalance and resistance to technology-enabled HR practices. Opportunities include HR analytics, continuous learning, transparent appraisal systems, leadership development and employee-centric digital transformation. The study concludes that banking institutions can strengthen competitiveness by integrating human resource planning with technology, fairness, employee development, employee voice and strategic decision-making for sustainable banking growth across diverse branch contexts.

Keywords: Human Resource Management, Indian banking, public sector banks, private sector banks, employee performance, SEM, AMOS, HRM challenges, HRM opportunities.
