Abstract
The rapid advancement of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed the nature and functioning of libraries worldwide. Libraries are no longer viewed merely as repositories of books and information resources; rather, they have evolved into dynamic knowledge centers that support learning, research, innovation, and community engagement. The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, and other emerging technologies has accelerated this transformation, giving rise to the concept of Smart Libraries.
A Smart Library integrates advanced technological infrastructure with user-centered services to create an intelligent, efficient, and adaptive information environment. These libraries utilize automation, data-driven decision-making, and digital platforms to enhance resource accessibility, optimize operational processes, and deliver personalized services. At the same time, Smart Libraries continue to uphold the traditional values of librarianship, including equitable access to information, knowledge sharing, and lifelong learning.
This article examines the evolving perception of Smart Libraries, the technological and physical infrastructure that supports them, their major applications, and the innovative services they provide. The study also discusses the challenges and future prospects of Smart Libraries in an increasingly digital and AI-driven world.
