Abstract

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) occupies a structurally unique position within India's financial architecture simultaneously discharging a sovereign socio-economic mandate and, since its landmark 2022 Initial Public Offering (IPO), meeting capital market expectations of profitability and shareholder value creation. This study undertakes a multi-objective empirical analysis of LIC's financial performance across FY 2021–22 through FY 2024–25, drawing exclusively on secondary data from LIC's audited annual reports, IRDAI annual reports, SEBI disclosures, and RBI Financial Stability publications. The research pursues three primary objectives: analysing LIC's growth and profitability trajectories; benchmarking its financial efficiency against HDFC Life, SBI Life, and ICICI Prudential; and assessing its solvency adequacy and persistency dynamics. A formal inferential statistical framework executed through SPSS Version 26.0 encompasses Pearson correlation, simple linear regression, one-way ANOVA with Tukey HSD post-hoc testing, one-sample t-test, and paired-samples t-test.

Key findings establish a near-perfect positive correlation between LIC's premium income and Value of New Business (r = .986, p < 0.01), confirming that underwriting growth translates proportionally into shareholder value. ANOVA reveals statistically significant differences in expense ratios across the four-insurer cohort (F(3,12) = 8.324, p = 0.003), with post-hoc analysis confirming LIC achieves cost efficiency statistically indistinguishable from SBI Life empirically refuting the narrative of public-sector operational inefficiency. A one-sample t-test confirms LIC's mean solvency ratio of 1.969x to be significantly above the IRDAI regulatory minimum of 1.50x (t(9) = 13.980, p < 0.001). A paired-samples t-test establishes a statistically significant actuarial decay of 13.96 percentage points between 13th-month and 61st-month persistency cohorts (t(4) = 13.514, p < 0.001), though LIC's long-term retention substantially outperforms private peers. These findings carry significant implications for insurance regulators calibrating supervisory intensity, for policymakers evaluating the sovereign guarantee architecture, and for institutional investors benchmarking LIC against private alternatives. The study contributes a statistically validated, temporally current institutional assessment to a literature that has largely relied on descriptive commentary.
