ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ethical dimensions of digital marketing, with particular attention to how organisations collect, use, and disclose consumer data, and how these practices shape consumer privacy, perceived transparency, and long-term trust in the digital era. As firms increasingly rely on behavioural tracking, algorithmic personalisation, and cross-platform data aggregation to drive marketing decisions, the boundary between effective personalisation and intrusive surveillance has become a central concern for scholars, regulators, and consumers alike. Drawing on theoretical frameworks including Privacy Calculus Theory, Communication Privacy Management (CPM) Theory, Stakeholder Theory, and Trust-Commitment Theory, this chapter develops a conceptual model linking data collection and consent practices, algorithmic transparency, and fairness to the formation and erosion of consumer trust.

The chapter reviews relevant literature, analyses real-world case studies spanning social media, mobile platforms, browser technology, retail analytics, and regulatory enforcement, and proposes a framework connecting ethical marketing practice to consumer trust and commercial performance. Findings suggest that transparency and demonstrable respect for consumer autonomy are not merely compliance obligations but strategic assets that influence brand equity and customer retention. The chapter also identifies key challenges to ethical digital marketing, including consent fatigue, the persistence of manipulative interface design, fragmented global privacy regulation, tension between data minimisation and personalisation, and the erosion of third-party data ecosystems. Future directions, including privacy-enhancing technologies, zero-party data strategies, explainable and auditable marketing algorithms, and global regulatory harmonisation, are discussed. This chapter contributes to the growing literature on responsible, consumer-centric digital marketing, and holds practical implications for marketing managers, business leaders, policymakers, and management students seeking to understand how ethical considerations are reshaping the discipline of marketing.
