Abstract
Recruitment and selection have always been among the most consequential decisions organizations make, yet the process has remained remarkably resistant to fundamental change for decades. What has shifted is not the underlying goal-identifying the right person for the right role-but the methods by which organizations now screen, evaluate, and select candidates. This chapter examines how artificial intelligence has reshaped recruitment and selection processes across the hiring lifecycle, from sourcing and screening to interviewing and final selection. It works through the established foundations of personnel selection, how digital transformation first disrupted traditional hiring practices, and the specific ways AI systems now generate candidate rankings, automate interviews, and predict job performance at scales no human recruitment team could match alone. It also weighs what is gained against what is lost: algorithmic bias embedded in training data, the erosion of human judgement in candidate evaluation, the depersonalization of the hiring experience, and the quiet transformation of what we consider legitimate evidence of job suitability. The chapter concludes by asking what a sensible, human-supervised approach to AI-assisted recruitment actually looks like in practice.
