ABSTRACT:

The gig economy has rapidly transformed global labour markets by creating flexible, platform-based employment opportunities across Megalopolis and Boondocks. Gig economy has developed as a substantial component of contemporary labour markets, offering flexible employment opportunities through digital platforms. However, the experiences of workers differ substantially between urban and rural settings. Urban gig workers benefit from advanced digital infrastructure, strong internet connectivity, high consumer demand, and access to multiple platforms, enabling income diversification through services such as ride-hailing, food delivery, courier logistics, and temporary digital work. Despite these advantages, they face challenges including intense competition, algorithmic control, unstable earnings, and rising living costs. In contrast, rural gig workers operate under infrastructural constraints such as poor broadband access, limited smartphone penetration, weak transport systems, and lower market demand. Their participation in gig work is often combined with traditional occupations like farming, handicrafts, and small trade, creating hybrid livelihood strategies. The study also reviews existing literature on digital labour, innovation, smart systems, and worker well-being to

contextualize the broader implications of platform-based employment. Furthermore, it identifies major challenges, needs, and future prospects for gig workers in both regions. The paper concludes that digital infrastructure and equitable policy intervention are crucial for reducing spatial inequality and ensuring inclusive, sustainable, and dignified opportunities within the gig economy for both urban and rural workers.

Keywords: Gig economy, Traditional occupations, Urban-Rural inequality, Boondocks, Megalopolises.
