Abstract - The Internet of Things (IoT) is a fast evolving technology that is used to connect physical things, sensor & systems, using the internet to provide data collection, communication, and automation in real time. IoT is being widely used in applications in smart houses, healthcare, industrial automation, transportation and smart cities. However, with the exponential growth in the networks of the Internet of Things have been created serious security gaps, due to a lack of proper authentication mechanisms, the absence of encryption, use of insecure protocols, or the lack of power in the devices that participate in the network of the Internet of Things. These vulnerabilities make IoT systems vulnerable to cyber attack, and these vulnerabilities can include denial of service attack, malware attack, unauthorized access and data breach.
This research aims to find out advanced security weakness in IoT network and analyzing effective defense mechanism to improve security in IoT. The common vulnerabilities at device level, network level and application level are analyzed and the effectiveness of different common security mechanisms like encryption, authentication, intrusion detection system and machine learning based threat detection and blockchain technology are analyzed in this study. The results demonstrate that the usage of advanced security techniques is a great way to enhance the accuracy of threat detection, decrease cyber risks and protect data. The research reveals the importance of integrated protection structures to guarantee security in communication, security in memory that holds sensitive information, and reliability for IoT system. This study is a contribution to the evolution of safe and efficient IoT networks and provides information on the obstacles of the modern security policy as well as the hardware for defense purposes.
