ABSTRACT
This research paper examines the impact of brand image on customer loyalty within the context of contemporary marketing. As markets grow increasingly saturated and product features are rapidly replicated by competitors, brand image has emerged as one of the few durable sources of differentiation available to firms. Consumers no longer choose brands solely on functional performance; they also gravitate toward brands whose image aligns with their self-concept, values, and expectations of quality and reliability. Drawing on theoretical frameworks including Aaker's Brand Equity Model, Keller's Customer-Based Brand Equity (CBBE) Model, Social Identity Theory, and the Trust-Commitment Theory of relationship marketing, this paper develops a conceptual model demonstrating how the dimensions of brand image — functional image, symbolic image, experiential image, and corporate image — directly and indirectly influence customer loyalty through the mediating mechanisms of brand trust and customer satisfaction.
The paper reviews relevant literature, analyses real-world case studies from diverse product and service sectors, and proposes an integrative framework linking brand image dimensions to loyalty outcomes. Findings suggest that a strong, consistent brand image not only reduces perceived purchase risk but also functions as a psychological anchor that sustains repeat purchase behaviour, positive word-of-mouth, and resistance to competitor switching. The paper also identifies key challenges to building and sustaining brand image, including brand dilution across extensions, the erosion of image consistency across omnichannel touchpoints, negative publicity in the social media era, and the difficulty of measuring image intangibles. Future directions, including AI-personalised brand experiences, brand communities, influencer-mediated brand image, and sustainability-linked branding, are discussed. This work contributes to the growing literature on brand management, relationship marketing, and consumer behaviour, and holds practical implications for brand managers, marketers, and policy makers.
