SUMMARY
The Baghdad Battery, a Parthian-era clay jar containing a copper cylinder and iron rod retrieved from Khujut Rabu‘a, Iraq, has long been identified as a functional galvanic cell, yet its intellectual source within Mesopotamian history remains completely unaccounted for. This paper contends that the source survives in the Agastya Samhita, an ancient Sanskrit writing of the Indian subcontinent, which describes a zinc-copper galvanic cell; the Mitra-Varuna yantra; generating approximately 1.1 volts through a copper sulfate electrolyte. The Baghdad artifact‘s iron-copper configuration, producing solely 0.5 to 0.8 volts, is identified as a materials-constrained replication of this Indian design, driven by the lack of zinc in Mesopotamia and its recorded industrial availability at the Zawar mines of Rajasthan. Comparative electrochemical analysis of both devices discloses five structural parallels: identical galvanic rule, similar and comparable metal couples, shared clay-vessel architecture, functionally equivalent electrolytic media, and corresponding depictions of physical sensation outcome; each steady and regular with technological transmission instead than independent invention.
The recorded maritime commerce corridor linking the Indus Valley port of Lothal to the Persian Gulf basin, active for over two millennia before the Parthian period, offers the mechanism for this transfer. Functional analysis identifies electroplating, ritual application through temple idols, and court diplomacy as the primary functions of the device following its coming in Mesopotamia. The paper further proposes that the Dendera reliefs of the Hathor Temple in Egypt, dated to approximately 50 BCE, represent a visual record of galvanic discharge lamps powered by series-connected cells, marking the westernmost extent of this ancient electrochemical tradition. Taken together, the evidence positions the Baghdad Battery not as a local Mesopotamian invention but as the material remnant of a knowledge system that originated in India, traveled through established commercial networks, and left a traceable record across the ancient world.
