 Abstract

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid of staggering potency, has become the primary driver of the modern overdose crisis. This crisis has now evolved into an even more dangerous threat. A new, lethal combination has emerged on the streets: fentanyl mixed with xylazine, a powerful animal sedative. This combination, often unknowingly consumed, is creating a wave of severe health complications and fatalities, pushing the epidemic into a frightening new phase and presenting unprecedented challenges for public health and safety increasing the number of drug abuse cases. This review investigates the alarming escalation of fentanyl and xylazine misuse in the United States, examining their historical backgrounds, how they work in the body, and their chemical properties. To address this crisis, this study recommends continuous monitoring, ongoing research into alternative pain management and addiction treatment methods, and international collaboration to disrupt the supply chain. The findings emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive policy reforms and coordinated efforts to mitigate the devastating consequences of fentanyl and xylazine misuse on public health and overall well-being, particularly in light of the growing "zombie effect" that is ravaging communities and overwhelming public health systems.
