Abstract:
An increasing reliance on drive-through options within the quick-service restaurant industry presents operational issues with respect to speed of service, accuracy of orders, and real time communication among team members. This research provides an examination of how Internet of Things (IoT) technologies may help increase the operational efficiency of the drive-through experience at quick-serve restaurants through data-driven automation and interconnection of systems. The primary objective is to examine how various forms of interconnected IoT technology, including vehicle detection sensor systems, enhanced camera systems, ordering systems which communicate via the web, and cloud-based management tools can create greater synergy throughout the entire process of utilizing a drive-through. An analytical approach focused on system architecture and implementation will be utilized to examine the use of IoT technology throughout key stages of the operational process, including when customers arrive, place their orders, prepare their meals, and receive their meals. The impact of using IoT technology on key performance indicators including service duration, queue dynamic behavior, order accuracy, and communication among team members will be analyzed in order to determine the impact of IoT technology on the operational performance of quick-serve restaurants. The findings indicate that the use of IoT enabled drive-through technology creates significant improvements in the throughput and reliability of service provided to customers due to the ability to provide real time monitoring, automated identification, and real time communication between the front end and back end of the operation. Furthermore, the continuous availability of operational data also enables the making of predictive decisions and the optimization of resources. However, continued challenges exist with regards to maintaining the stability of networks, ensuring compatibility of various devices used to support the use of IoT technology, and maintaining the security of data generated during the use of IoT technology. Overall, this research contributes to existing literature regarding smart restaurant systems by providing a structured framework for the implementation of IoT technology in drive-through environments and highlighting its potential as a scalable solution for the next generation of technology driven food service operations.
